Special Education Classroom Pilot Project
This pilot project was an initiative of Jamie Alleyne-Sorhaindo of Brainstorm Inc. in collaboration with the Dominican Ministry of Education.
It was established at the Goodwill Primary School (GPS) – the largest primary school on the island, which serves a wide range of underpriviledged communities. The aim was to create a model special education classroom that would promote inclusion and build capacity amongst teachers for working with children with exceptional needs. The project sought to aid students, who had a wide range of exceptional needs, maximize their learning potential and go on to succeed in school and the rest of their lives, as they grow to become contributing citizens of Dominica.
Many of the students came from very difficult backgrounds, which contributed to their challenges in learning. The Project’s team worked hard at providing a warm, fun, and engaging school environment to promote the students' all-around wellbeing.
2007 - 2009
Apprenticeship Programme
In October of 2007, Brainstorm Inc. established an apprenticeship program with Dominica State College psychology and education students. These students received experience in their field of study through theoretical and practical training to be one-on-one instructor therapists for children with exceptional needs - a unique opportunity on the island. In exchange, apprentices volunteered on a shift basis at the day treatment centre and at the Special Education Pilot Project.
The experience was heart warming and life-changing for all involved - ourselves, students, clients, teachers, parents, and apprentices - many of whom received subsequent employment opportunities, with various agencies, as a direct result of their outstanding performance during the apprenticeship period. We thank them all for their dedication and the honour of working with such amazing young people!

2009 - 2010
Children's Wellness Centre
In 2009, Brainstorm Inc. boldy undertook a new venture in Dominica. We sought to open a Children's Wellness Centre to house our Brain Gym, Mommy & Me Groups, and our Beloved Day Treatment Clinic for Children diagnosed with Autism and/or other developmental disabilties. This got off to a great start! Unfortunately, in 2010 we were forced to close our doors due to our inability to afford rental space appropriate for our needs.
Many of those who benefit from our programmes cannot afford to pay fees that will cover ever-increasing overheads. Nevertheless we remained committed and tried to be creative. Our therapists went out into the homes of those who needed 1-1 therapy, but alas, this too had to come to an end due to lack of financial resources.
We have not given up though... and we are pleading to anyone who can

Snake King of the Kalinago is an engaging children's book retelling an ancient myth of the indigenous Kalinago/Carib people of Dominica. The book is written by then Grade 6 students of the Atkinson Primary School - many of whom come from the Carib Territory. This book continues to get rave literary reviews internationally!
